Son of Zangi ,who founded the Zangid dynasty (1127-1262);he succeeded his father in his Syrian possessions and undertoook successful campaigns against the Frankish Kings of the Levant. He was indirectly responsiable  for the rise of Salah -al-Din (Saladin).
