Muhammad’s immediate family on his father's side were the banu Hashim or hashimites, so named for Muhammad's great-grandfather Hashim. (Banu means sons of, and is the plural of ibn.) One ot Hashim's brothers, al-Muttalib, gave his name to the Banu-Muttalibites), and the son, Umayyah, of another founded the Umayyads. These three families, which will figure prominently in this chapter, were in turn subgroups within Quraysh of the clan Banu-'Abd-Manaf. To clarify relationships further, note that `Abd-al-Muttalib was the son of Hashim (and hence a Hashimite, not a Muttalibite) and the father of Abu-Talib and of Muhammad's father, `Abd-Allah.
