The Kharijities, or Khawarij, formed the earliest religio-political group in Islam. They constituted the body of men who turned againest 'Ali, after having supported him againest his rival Mu'awiyah.
They opposed Quraysh's monopoly over the caliphate, and were responsible for mush bloodshed during the first three centuries of Islam
