A Byzantine Christian Arab tribe of south Arabian origin that held dynastic sway over lands north of Arabia under Byzantine tutelage and enjoyed a high standard of culture. They were the first outside the peninsula to accept Islam, which they came to regard as the religion of the Arabs.
